Biodiesel Pilot Project

The County of Essex has initiated a Pilot Project to use Biodiesel Fuel that will demonstrate municipal leadership in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. The pilot project was considered by Essex County Highways (ECH) to explore the advantages and/or disadvantages of using biodiesel in its municipal fleet. The goal of the pilot project is to investigate the opportunities and constraints with regard to implementing the use of biodiesel in the County diesel fleet, including possible sources, blend rates, delivery, and price options, to transfer knowledge gained and explore further opportunities for the Corporation, as well as the local municipalities. The Pilot program will test B5 biodiesel in a small truck and compare its performance operationally, and from a consumption perspective to a similar unit operated on standard commercial diesel fuel.
